101 south cd design

i have been stoked about the whole 101 south design project, from the brand identity to the alblum art and cd design. i will post a pic of the alblum art once it is printed. below is the cd design. next comes the web design and perhaps some posters and such.

generative typography

i have just ventured into the realm of generative art, where i am happy to have found nodebox, an application (built for mac os x) that uses python programming code to create 2d visuals. the creations can then be exported as a pdf and opened up in adobe illustrator for further creative manipulation.

earth serpent

on a very warm and sunny day in the berkeley hills, noah and i brainstormed various land art creations, eventually deciding on a serpentine-like form of eucalyptus bark emerging from out of a trap door in the earth. another way of looking at the form, is the earth opening its mouth and a giant tongue or tentacle twisting out.

i took the liberty to create a new blog dedicated to land art, to showcase personal, collaborative, and discovered land art creations and inspirations. my aim is that this land art blog will eventually have a a bunch of contributors and will serve as an inspiration to all. i will still post personal and collaborative work on this blog.

brand identity concepts

i have been busy creating a brand identity for a winery here at work. i created a ton of concepts for the winery that is soon going onto the market. the chosen brand will be integrated into the oversize brochure and system design, as well as a website. here are a few of the concepts. although not my favorite, the fourth example is shown due to it being potentially chosen by the client.

new design position

i recently obtained a new design position at a small yet forward thinking design, web, and consulting studio in downtown sacramento with a great group of talented guys (i hear that arnold schwarzenegger has an office a few floors up from mine...). i have already jumped full force into some brand identity design and various re-branding projects. i look forward to posting some of my upcoming work.

scandinavian design radio interview

radio free finland, a live weekly talk show, interviewed helsinki based designer, igor polyakov, on scandinavian design, such as furniture and industrial design. i found this to be a very educational and inspirational broadcast.

a square of fennel stalks

even though it was a drizzly day in sacramento, it thankfully didn't stop noah and i from venturing forth to a great plot of land by the american river for a little land art collaboration, utilizing the oh so prevalent dried (well, rather sodden on this outing) fennel stalks. it was rewarding to see our creation grow and grow...into a square.

land art

given that it was a beautiful and warm (spring?) day, i opted for a little land art by the american river, utilizing the very prevelent dried fennel stalks.

helvetica and inspiration

i came across a great website today, helvetica, where one can watch some clips of the upcoming feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. i have found these clips to be very inspiring. the clips are also available on youtube.

eucalyptus spheres

it was very enjoyable to collaborate on the eucalyptus spheres land art project with noah. there was definitely a learning curve in creating these giant spheres of wrapped and interwoven shreds of eucalyptus bark. first we started by creating a series of circular forms, then weaving them together, but the strength was just not there. finally, we began as one would with a snowball, rolling, and packing, and as the spheres became larger, there was more interweaving and shaping involved.

land art

here are two creations that continue with the working theme of the spiral in land art. after creating the spiral with small shells, i am next going to look at other materials from nature as medium for creating the spiral. i really enjoy getting away from the computer screen on a nice sunny day and working in the fresh air with my hands. i find that it really allows me to get lost in my thoughts and actively create.
